The Apple iPad is perhaps the biggest thing to hit consumer technology in 2010. Everyone seems to be talking about and once again, Steve Jobs and his Apple friends are laughing all the way to the bank as they have yet again succeeded in wowing the market with their new device.
The truth is, the iPad warrants all the hype that surrounds it both during its pre-release and until present. Why might you ask? The answer is simple. It's because the iPad is a truly awesome device that you will definitely fall in love with after a few minutes of use. Here is a closer look at some of the specs and features of this amazing piece of technology.
Technical Specs
To start things off, let's have a look at the technical specifications of the Apple iPad. The device has the dimensions of 9.56 x 7.47 x.5 inches. The capacitive touch screen display is quite sizable at 9.7" and has a very vivid resolution of 1024 x 786 pixels. Under the hood is Apple's own 1GHz processor which is manufactured by Samsung. The device comes in three variations that differ in storage size. You can pick from 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB.
The iPad comes with standard 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi connectivity as well as a Bluetooth port. There's also a 3G version of the device which supports both EDGE and HSDPA. According to the manufacturer, the device should have a battery life of up to 10 hours which is of course, dependent on how much you use it. Similar to other Apple devices, the battery is fixed and is not replaceable.
The Soft Side
The Apple iPad sports an upgraded version of the iPhone operating system which features a few cool additions to the user interface. Some of the most noteworthy modifications include modal pop-overs (small windows that pop out on the screen), split screen display for applications, as well as the new drop-down menus.
As you would expect, a majority of the pre-installed applications have become bigger and better. They have been upgraded to maximise the bigger display at hand. The mail, Safari, iTunes, YouTube, App Store, calendar, and photos have all received a wonderful touch-up.
Two new applications you'll find on the device is the e-reader app called iBooks which is accompanied by its own store which will let you download whatever book you want right to your iPad. The interfaces of the stores are actually much better than what we've grown accustomed to in the iPhone. Those in the iPad are actually closer to the store apps in the Mac.
Added Accessories
As with other Apple products, there are also a number of accessories available for the iPad which you can purchase at your nearest Power Mac centre. In order to fully enjoy your Apple iPad you can buy a standard stand/dock, case, a camera kit, or even a dock that comes with a physical keyboard. This will give you an alternative if you don't want to use the virtual keyboard. But then again, given its excellent responsiveness, who wouldn't want to use the virtual pad?
