Rest in peace you hard wired keyboards, mouse and mouse pads, puny battery life, and possibly you too physical books, the information paradigm is about to shift and it is called the tablet device. But it is not arriving without struggle, as some refer to it as a glorified portable media player and a rotten one at that. Some refer to it as an Apple zombie due to its similarity to Apple's iPhone. Why? Well you can not play movies wide screen. There are limited to no USB ports, depending on which model you have. Accessing Skype or watching a Flash Video is not possible, currently. All in all, many of its critiques believe, all it really is, is an expensive email reader...just another flashy device...a luxury item...a transitory novelty and it does not have a future. But if you pay close attention to the public relations it is receiving...you know they are wrong.
Despite the negative views, tablet devices are here to stay. they will need to be priced less, weigh less, and offer a more improved connectivity set up, but they are here for good. Industry pundits, for the most part, are all thumbs up, a new category of computing is definitely on the horizon and it is not likely to fade away as quickly as some of the hype about them disclaims.
Science fiction has become science fact as the first mass-market tablet device, the Apple iPad hits the stores. And like the iPhone, Apple owns the category. But how long will that last? Already competition is brewing after only 90 days on the market.
Price is the first barrier the iPad knock offs will most likely attack. With a current price tag of close to $500, the Apple iPad is a luxury item at this point. The price must drop in order to create greater mass appeal. The next dimension to conquer is the tablets weigh. Remember, one of its core features is it is a reading device and books are light weight, therefore their replacement must also be light weight. When watching or handling your tablet device for a long period of time those additional extra ounces become rather noticeable. Consumers do not favor products which are bothersome.
In today's world not connected means not in business, means out of touch. Improved connectivity is the other essential for these new tablet devices. In addition to being a reading device, the future tablet device will also become a laptop and netbook replacement. Functionality beyond Wi-Fi connectivity will be necessary. Wi-Fi hot spots are still not available everywhere. 3G and 4G coverage is also still pretty spotty, and at last report, 3G connectivity is slower than Wi-Fi connectivity.
With an average price tag of $50.00 or more per month, few tablet device users may find the additional expense worth it. Broadband remains a national crisis here in the U.S. and resolving this crisis may have adverse affects of the future success of tablet devices. Dependable wireless everywhere is needed and the ability to connect is a must.
The future of this new medium is extremely large. The iPad competitors know this. A ton of customers are headed this way and there is no doubt the iPad/tablet pc thing is going to catch on and grow into a pretty big deal. Tablet devices are the next big blockbuster. Now to make sure they really catch on and maintain their new found status, the manufacturers must deliver optimal user satisfaction, as this is the true key to their success.
