Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Philippines : Price, Specs, Hands-on Video, Quick Review

Spotted it at the newly opened Smart-PLDT Jump Store at SM MegaMall CyberZone last night:

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, the thinnest tablet out in the market today -- according to Samsung.

My initial observations on the device:

1. It's lighter than iPad2 -- because its shell is made largely of glossy plastic vs. iPad2's aluminum body.
2. It's actually thinner than iPad2 -- but I think the latter's tapered edges make Apple's tablet feel a tad more sleek.
3. Despite having a plastic case, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 nonetheless feels well-constructed. You can hold it with one hand on one side and not worry that it might crack in the middle.
4. I'm impressed with the user interface. It's neat and quite easy to use.
5. Love the front-facing camera. I can imagine me and my friends having fun with it in a party -- taking wacky group photos.
6. The tablet handles multi-tasking quite well. Transitions feel smooth too. The dual core chip does its thing well.
7. The keyboard is a joy to use. Even if you have really big fingers, I don't think you'll have a problem using it.
8. There's a virtual screen capture button found in the 'taskbar', which comes really handy for when you want to show one section of the UI on your blog or to share what you're doing on your tablet with your friends on Facebook; You won't find this feature in Android 3.0. Some are saying that the reason for the delayed release of Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is because Samsung wanted to have Android 3.1 running smoothly on it.

No official word yet on pricing details nor exact release date. My guesstimate on the SRP? Around Php 30,000-38,000. Should come bundled with top tier Smart Data Plans too.

The problem with large publishers and some of the more prominent development studios is that, despite having the know-how and the resources to make great games, they often prove themselves to have lost touch with the common man. When forced to choose between the reasonable and the unreasonable (but popular with the ignorant shareholders), they tend to reliably go for the latter. The result is a slew of otherwise easily avoidable problems for the end users, which in turn pushes people towards unsavory acts such as piracy. All of this is yet another good reason to look closely at the indie scene, which, while having smaller budgets, is arguably more creative and certainly friendlier to the consumer.

One good example of creativity and friendliness is E McNeill, the one man behind the indie strategy game Auralux. When I first heard about the game, I went to his website and downloaded a demo, which turned out to be pretty neat. My next step was to buy the game, but something went wrong; instead of making a purchase, I ended up complaining about the problem on some forum. You know how that goes, right? We’ve all done it. You complain on the publisher’s/developer’s own site, along with many other people, and…nothing happens. Well, this time it was different. Not only did McNeill find my post on a site that was not even his own, but he also contacted me personally and resolved my problem quickly and efficiently. The thing is, he didn’t know I was a gaming journalist until after he helped me. That’s indie for you.

Auralux is very simple. Each mission has stars that produce little sparks of the same color. The player controls the blue stars, while the opposing orange and green stars are computer-controlled. The rate of production depends on the size of the star, of which there are three. The smallest produces one spark per tick, the medium makes two, and the large generates three. The goal of the game is to take over all of the enemy stars, while preventing the loss of your own. Should you happen to lose a star or two, though, don’t worry—you can always rebuild them, or even repair them while they’re being damaged. Unlike the spores in Eufloria (another indie game that’s also an influence on Auralux), the sparks can be directly controlled by the player.

Each star can be destroyed by having sparks of a different color crash into it. The number of sparks it takes depends on the size of the star. Once a location is vacated, or once you find an empty location, you can build your own star by sending sparks into the star-spot. It takes the same number to build a star as it takes to destroy it, so there’s a 1:1 spark ratio. The same proportion also holds true in spark vs. spark combat. If sparks of different colors touch each other, then they mutually annihilate. That’s it so far as the rules and mechanics go. The fun part is devising a strategy that allows you to take over the symmetrically designed levels, while preventing the computer (or computers) from doing the same. All of the age-old principles apply; you benefit by playing your enemies against each other and by employing the doctrine of concentration of force.

Visually, Auralux is very simple and yet very pretty. I enjoyed looking at the screen as I was playing, and I also enjoyed the ambient sound effects. There are no orchestral scores or realistic 3D audio, but that’s a part of the appeal. Even though the game is not easy, with many of the levels being incredibly difficult to beat, there is no sense of urgency. A StarCraft spaz has no advantage against a slower, contemplative player, although tarrying too long creates problems down the line. Still, there is always time to think and react. If an enemy is attacking, the attack is not instant, so you can muster a defense. If you see that your own attack is destined to fail, you can always call it off.

I enjoyed my time with Auralux. Aside from being a fun and relaxing game, it’s also a testament to the fact that one doesn’t have to be a gigantic conglomerate with hundreds of employees, corporate headquarters, and a dozen rabid lawyers on retainer to produce a quality product. Matters are also well-handled outside the game. There is a free demo, so you can try before you buy. There is no DRM, so you don’t have to worry about being punished for purchasing. The price is just $5, so anyone can easily afford it. Most of all, there is an actual person behind this game, someone who cares enough about his art and his customers to go out of his way to help them with whatever issues they might have. This is the type of developer whom we gamers should support, because unlike some, he brings genuine value to the table.

Once again, you are reading something new and exciting from a company that has been known for creating such products - Apple. Installation

Installing the kindle App in your eye pad is easy as apple pie. Simply download the Kindle App for free and log in my signing into your account. If you currently have a physical kindle, you will find all your books in your archive ready to download with a push of a button. The Kindle iPad app will sync up your existing reading library. There's also the ability to drop multiple bookmarks, skip between them, switch animated page turns on or off, and adjust the font and background hue of your digital pages. Downloading is very simple as your books are not organized in a slow and long single page mode of the physical Kindle. You get to see the full-color book cover which you can easily navigate by sliding your fingers along your collection.

Settings

When opening the settings, you are given the choice of reading backgrounds from white, black, and sepia. Sepia gives the most "book" like experience. In addition, text size and color is fully customizable.

Page Turning

STM Jacket (Travel Bag/Case) for iPad Review

The STM Jacket for the iPad is made out of water resistant 600D nylon. The exterior looks really good with a nice chocolate brown finish on my STM Jacket. The front of the Jacket has a little pouch where you can store your iPhone or any iPod, this pouch is dubbed as the 'Unique Slider'. The pouch allows your device to go in at an angle but does not have a zipper which was a huge concern for me because I was worried it would fall out. This isn't the case however, I tried to really shake the case with my iPhone in to get the sucker out but it just wouldn't budge. This must be due to the iPhone going in at an angle and the top of the pouch having a flap which catches it.

Underneath the layer of the pouch we are greeted with a another bigger one which has a zipper this time. This is designed for cables and earbuds but is big enough for a small book or documents but there is another part of the STM Jacket designed for that. On the right hand side of the Jacket we see a handle for carrying it and around the back we have a huge open compartment which is designed for paper work ect to go into. Up top there is a a removable adjustable shoulder strap. The exterior is very very well stitched, the materials used are great and it looks fantastic.

So what about the iPad, where does that go? Well I have left the best for last, the STM Jacket has a two zippers going from the bottom left to the top right which once undone allow you to place your iPad inside. The iPad is cushioned against soft touch orange polyester which doesn't scratch or cause any harm to your iPad. The Jacket leaves enough space around the iPad so you can insert it with a skin on like the Case Mate Gelli. This is a huge plus.

The protection offered is quite substantial with the fantastic thick padding right around the case. So small drops and bumps when traveling aren't a worry. The waterproof nylon means when it rains the drops will not soak through the material and instead just drops off the Jacket. The stitching and nylon also come together to create a superb build.

Overall the STM Jacket is a very well made, protective, stylish, easy to move around with and a purposeful product which I highly recommend to anyone on the go and traveling.

Apple iPad - Review

You are perhaps wondering if you should spend $599 or more to buy iPad. Does the iPad in essence revolutionize the concept of a tablet computers?

The iPad is the latest gadget in Apple's family. Apple announced on January 27th, 2010 beginning of a whole new kind of computer - something what could be the most significant product launch in its history.

It looks that no one is pretty positive how to categorise the Apple iPad. It is somewhat in between a standard laptop computer and pocket computers like the iPod Touch. In other words, the iPad is something in between its iPhone and really successful MacBook line. It is a bigger and faster version of its iPod Touch.

The build quality of iPad is remarkable and nothing feels cheap. The aluminum back feels great under the finger. This device weight is 1.5 pounds and it is comfortable to hold it at most angles.

The majority of iPad surface is taken up by a 9.7-inch, capacitive, multitouch LED-backlit display surrounded by a smooth black bezel. The display is sharp and bright with a resolution of 1024x768. The contrast and colors are really nice and the brightness distribution is very constant in spite of the viewing angle. The glossy glass panel in front of the screen both protects it and enhances contrast. Such glossy screens are notorious for reflections, but I didn't find iPad reflections to be a problem. The iPad is easy to tilt a few degrees if are annoying.

Apple gives the iPad a truly fast processor. The iPad packs Apple's custom, PA Semi-designed 1GHz A4 system-on-a-chip -- a single Cortex A8 core coupled with a PowerVR SGX GPU. Things open quickly, scroll fast, load fast. Browsing the internet is much better than on the tiny iPhone display.

The iPad uses a built-in rechargeable Lithium-polymer battery that can provide up to ten hours of usage.

You operate the iPad by tapping and dragging on the glass with your fingers, in the same way as you operate the iPhone. Few years ago it was unbelievable that you can operate computer without help of the mouse.

The iPad runs iPhone OS 3.2 it is in fact an iPad-optimized version of the current iPhone operating system, adjusted for the iPad's larger display and new apps. The use of the iPhone operating system and its clever data-entry scheme ( virtual keyboard, multitouch gestures ) turns the iPad into much more usable device than any Windows-based tablet PC we have seen.

6. The On-screen keyboard. This one is good and bad. I initial sampled the iPad in the store I struggled with the onscreen keyboard. But since my first encounter I have learned to that there is no kinetic feedback on my fingers, so I just let the other senses take over. Then the keyboard worked as you would expect it to as it is very responsive and I enter text quickly. It is still nothing like typing on a real keyboard, but iPad's virtual QWERTY keypad isn't as terrible as I, and others, had once feared. The automatic error correction handles the small mistakes pretty good. You can always invest in the Apple $79 iPad keyboard dock. That is more ordinary and more traditional.

7. Speakers Not for Audiophiles. In fact, they are no Bose or Harman/Kardon either. In my opinion they speakers sound tinny. Being a movie/media/MP3/music creation devise, the built-in speakers are disappointing. There are also docking speakers and transferring files, but we shouldn't have to. Hey, Bose, now that's a good idea!

8. It has a Glossy Front Oh, it looks so nice. gleaming and sparkly. Indoors it works great for nearly everything. Then, you step out into the sunlight. Then shine isn't cool. Fingerprints come to life and where did the movie, book, picture or internet go? A matte glass option would be nice, or even a plastic cover. Have you ever seen the Kindle commercial where the lady with the expensive sunglasses makes the dude with an iPad look silly? Well, it's true, but take that smart-alecky woman indoors, THEN that guy could school her on the features of his iPad.

9. For Kids, The Well Behaved Ones, Though. Is the iPad fragile as it seems? You could go to ToysRUs and find a thousand pads for kids, but this is the shiniest, coolest, and mom and dad play with it, and kids want it. Our teenagers seems to fly through it and catch on to the games and apps faster than I do. They love doing their homework on it (they are home-schooled and they want to use the iPad for all their work - except the typing their papers.

10. It's an Email, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Skype Computer when you don't have a computer computer. Go ahead, go out to a meeting, a vacation in another city or country and you can keep in touch with office and family and friends easily with the iPad. Can you imagine what color your friends on Facebook would turn if you posted from Florence, Italy, or from St. Thomas, or from the Grand Canyon? Take notes and more. Keep in touch wherever you go, as long as you pay the monthly fee for data usage. If you are in danger of going over your 250mg or 2GB limit they will contact you and give you the options. If you aren't online 24/7 then you should be okay with those limits.
